RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The Nevada State Law Enforcement Memorial, located on the grounds of the Nevada State Capitol, bears the names of all 158 Nevada law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Unfortunately, so many heroes continue to give their lives for the safety of our state, that the Memorial has no space for additional names.
“Its a location that we can honor the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their communities and the state of Nevada. It’s a place that they will never be forgotten. It’s a place where families and loved ones can always come to see their name,” said Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley. “I don’t know that it’s enough, but it’s all we can do, and it guarantees that they won’t be forgotten.”
Sheriff Coverley says they will be adding a name this year. “Nevada doesn’t add names every year, but unfortunately, this year we are going to add a name. North Las Vegas Police Officer Jason Roscow gave his life protecting his community. So his name will be added this year.”
But the Nevada Police Foundation says there is no more space for names on the original memorial. Now the foundation is calling on the community to raise money for two new panels.
“We need to expand the surface area of the memorial to add Officer Roscow’s name, and in the future, I am sure there will be more, unfortunately. We need to increase that space. We are looking to raise $100,000. We are close to that, but we still need some more,” added the Sheriff.
Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley shares how symbolic this memorial is. “We all have an undying commitment to serve the communities in which we live. We do that with an unwavering willingness to do whatever it takes to make sure that our communities are safe. Sometimes that is laying down our lives. When everyone else is running away from an incident, the men and women of your local law enforcement agency, whether it is a sheriff’s office, police department or state agency, are running towards that. They do that knowing that they may never get out alive.”
Due to the lack of space, Officer Roscow’s name will be temporarily etched on the
Memorial until permanent panels can be added. Because the Memorial receives no funding from any governmental agency, the Nevada Police Foundation is seeking support from the public to fund the proposed construction, continuing maintenance and upkeep. The planned construction will add two panels to the memorial.
